In a world racing toward disruption, our CTO Nemanja Maric is focused on something more enduring: building technology that improves, scales and stands the test of time. Nemanja brings nearly two decades of engineering leadership rooted in resilience and real-world impact. In this Q&A, he unpacks the hidden vulnerabilities in many organisations and the mindset shift leaders need to build to adapt to change.

Question 2: What’s the difference between technology that works - and technology that lasts?

What do you think the next era of innovation will require—not from technology, but from leadership?
The next era of innovation will demand leaders who can create clarity, align diverse teams, and move fast without losing focus. Technology is no longer the bottleneck - there are multiple ways to build almost anything today. The real challenge is ensuring the right people are working on the right problems at the right time.
Leaders will need to foster environments where teams feel trusted to experiment, challenge assumptions, and adapt quickly to market signals. Innovation will depend less on making all the right calls from the top, and more on empowering teams with a clear “why” and the autonomy to figure out the “how”.
What’s the difference between technology that works - and technology that lasts?
Technology that works solves the immediate problem; technology that lasts keeps delivering value as the business, users, and environment change.
Lasting systems are modular, resilient, and adaptable, evolving without the need for costly rebuilds every time requirements shift. They’re built with the understanding that change is inevitable - whether it’s new regulations, shifting customer expectations, or emerging market opportunities.
The key is balancing technical excellence with adaptability, so what you build today becomes a foundation for tomorrow, not a constraint.
At Finworks, we take this long view. We design our platforms with the expectation that our clients’ needs will change, ensuring they can adapt quickly and confidently - so what works today continues to create value well into the future.
What are the quiet risks in many organisations’ current systems that leaders tend to overlook?
One of the biggest hidden risks is inflexibility - systems that are so tightly coupled or heavily customised that even small changes become slow and expensive.
Another is poor alignment between technology and business objectives. When technical teams and business stakeholders aren’t working toward the same outcomes, you risk building solutions that are functional but fail to move the needle where it matters most.
And then there’s technical debt. When it quietly accumulates without a plan to address it, it doesn’t just slow delivery and make changes costly - it also stifles innovation. Teams spend more time maintaining outdated systems than experimenting with new ideas, and the organisation misses chances to differentiate and lead in its market.
With AI accelerating, what questions should leaders be asking before embedding it into their operations?
Before adopting AI, leaders should be asking:
- What real problem are we solving, and is AI the best approach?
- Do we have the right data - accurate, unbiased, and secure - to support it?
- How will we measure success beyond the initial proof of concept?
- What are the regulatory, ethical, and reputational risks?
- How will we keep humans in the loop where judgment matters most?
AI is powerful, but it’s not magic. The organisations that get the most value will be the ones that integrate AI responsibly, transparently, and with a clear link to business outcomes - not just because it’s the latest trend.
How do you see the role of platforms like Finworks evolving as organisations demand more control and less complexity?
This is where Finworks has always been ahead. We’ve built low-code, high-configurability platforms that don’t lock you in or slow you down. Our clients can adapt, reconfigure, and extend without starting from scratch - or depending on us every time. As demands increase, platforms must give control back to users, not add layers of abstraction. Simplicity, not simplification - that’s the future.
